WhatsApp usernames: when a lead arrives with no phone number

October 15, 2026

WhatsApp is rolling out usernames, country by country. Once a customer turns one on, a business they message for the first time no longer sees their phone number. For teams that sell on WhatsApp, the number has always been the lead's ID, so this is worth planning for now, before it reaches your market.

What changed

WhatsApp opened username reservations on 29 June 2026 and said usernames would arrive gradually "over the coming months", with a notice in the app when they reach your country. In its own words, if you turn a username on, people or businesses you message for the first time will not see your phone number. There is no public directory: someone needs your exact username to start a chat, and people can add an optional username key that others must enter before messaging them.

For businesses on the WhatsApp Business Platform (the official API that CRMs and shared inboxes use), Meta's developer documentation sets out what the business receives. Every WhatsApp user now has a business-scoped user ID, which Meta began sending with incoming messages in early April 2026. Once a customer adopts a username, their phone number is left out of the message data unless one of three things is true: you messaged or called that number in the last 30 days, they messaged or called you in the last 30 days, or they are in your contact book (a Meta-hosted list whose launch date is not yet given). Meta says partners and click-to-WhatsApp advertisers must support the new ID to avoid "losing the ability to process their messages". It also notes the details are "subject to change".

Meta has also added a button, available from early July 2026 in templates and interactive messages, that asks the customer to share their WhatsApp number in the chat with one tap.

Business usernames are a separate thing. Since 29 June a business can claim a username, including the one it already uses on Instagram or Facebook. Meta is clear that a business username does not hide the business's own number.

The customerDoes the business get their number?
Has no usernameYes, as now
Has a username and messages you for the first timeNo: a username and a user ID only
Has a username, and you have messaged or called each other in the last 30 daysYes
Has a username and taps the button to share their numberYes, in the chat

The worry is already showing. On 14 October 2026 Bizna Kenya reported that traders fear usernames will cost them sales, because they use the number to confirm who a buyer is, arrange deliveries and chase payments. One reseller described buyers he could not reach: "All because a username replaced a phone number."

Not yet known: WhatsApp has not published how many people use a username, or the date usernames reach each country. Check the app and Meta's documentation before you change how your team works.

Who it affects

Any team whose leads start on WhatsApp: click-to-WhatsApp ads, "message us" buttons on a website, QR codes on flyers and stands. The pain sits wherever the phone number does a job: matching a chat to a lead in your CRM, spotting duplicates, calling the lead back, sending an SMS reminder, or giving a rider a number for a delivery.

Customers who already have your number saved, or who have already shared theirs, carry on as before. People can also choose not to use a username at all.

What to do this week

  1. Claim your business username. In the WhatsApp Business app, or in WhatsApp Manager or Meta Business Suite if you use the platform. Use the name customers already know from Instagram or Facebook.
  2. Ask for the number early, with a reason. "What's the best number for the delivery driver?" works better than a cold request. If your provider supports Meta's share-number button, use it in your first template.
  3. Save the number in the lead record the moment you get it. After 30 days of silence the platform may stop sending it, so the CRM, not someone's handset, should hold it.
  4. Ask your WhatsApp inbox or CRM provider one question. How does a chat with a username and no phone number show up, and how is it matched to an existing lead?
  5. Check your ad follow-up. Ad leads are where first contact happens most. Our guide to following up click-to-WhatsApp ad leads sets out a first reply and a three-day plan; add "ask for the number" to the first day.

Where Socianet fits

We sell a CRM, so here is our angle, kept apart from the news. Socianet's WhatsApp inbox runs on the official Business Platform, so the rules above apply to our customers too, and Meta's message charges still apply. What Socianet does is put every lead in one pipeline with an owner, whether it arrived on WhatsApp, a call, an email or a website form, so the customer lives in a shared record rather than in one rep's phone. Instant replies and our AI agent can ask for the details you need in the first minutes of a chat, then hand over to a person, and follow-up timetables make sure the next step happens even when a rep is busy.

Every lead in one place, with or without a phone number

Send us your sheet and we will show you your own leads in a Socianet pipeline.
