Sales tech this week: HubSpot regroups, Gemini agent, AI agent rules
Five stories from 5 to 12 October 2026 for sales teams of 3 to 50. HubSpot is reorganising around what customers want done rather than its product hubs. Google has shown an AI agent that works inside Gmail. The UK data regulator wants evidence on AI agents. And new business surveys show demand picking up in Kenya and holding strong in the UAE.
In this round-up
1. HubSpot regroups around outcomes and cuts about 7% of staff
On 6 October 2026 HubSpot told the US Securities and Exchange Commission that its board had approved a restructuring plan on 1 October affecting about 7% of its workforce, with expected charges of $65 million to $75 million and most roles gone by the end of the first quarter of its 2027 financial year. Local reporting put the number at nearly 660 people. In a letter to staff, chief executive Yamini Rangan said product teams will be organised around customer outcomes rather than individual "Hubs", with fewer management layers. She described a shift that is "transforming product, pricing and how we serve our customers". No price changes have been announced.
What to do: If your team runs on HubSpot, nothing changes for now. Note your renewal date, read the pricing terms in your contract, and keep a recent export of your contacts and deals. If you are comparing CRMs, our guide to what per-seat pricing really costs shows the sums at 5, 10, 25 and 50 seats.
2. Google shows Gemini agent, an AI coworker inside Gmail
At its Gemini at Work event on 8 October 2026, Google Cloud announced Gemini agent, described as one agent for work that plans tasks, uses tools and returns finished work inside the apps people already use. It works inline in Gmail, Docs, Sheets and Chat, and Google says it can connect to business systems including Salesforce. Google says "coworker agents" can have their own Workspace accounts and email addresses. 9to5Google reports it is in private preview, with wide availability "soon" for Workspace customers on select Business and Enterprise plans. No pricing has been published.
What to do: If your team uses Google Workspace, agree now what an AI may send to a customer in your name, and who checks it. An agent that can start email threads can also send the wrong price to a lead.
3. UK data regulator asks for evidence on AI agents
On 8 October 2026 the UK data regulator opened a call for evidence on how data protection law applies to agentic AI: systems that plan and act with limited human oversight. It covers data security, transparency, accountability, automated decision-making, fairness, purpose limitation and lawfulness of processing. It closes on 20 November 2026, and the regulator says the answers will shape its final guidance.
What to do: If an AI tool replies to or qualifies your leads, write down in one page what it does, what personal data it uses, when a person takes over and how a customer can reach a human. That note will help whatever the final guidance says.
4. Kenya: the private sector grows again in September
The Stanbic Bank Kenya PMI, published on 5 October 2026, rose to 51.3 in September from 49.7 in August. Any reading above 50 means conditions improved. New orders rose for a fourth month running, and so did staffing. Output fell for a seventh month, but only slightly. Costs are biting: about 30% of firms reported higher input costs, and selling prices rose at the second-fastest pace since November 2023.
What to do: More enquiries are coming in, but buyers are watching costs. Reply fast, put the price and what it includes in writing, and follow up every quote within a day or two.
5. UAE: growth holds at a 20-month high, prices climb
The S&P Global UAE PMI, published on 5 October 2026, held at 55.3 in September, the same as August's 20-month high. Output grew at the fastest pace since February, new export orders rose at the sharpest pace since November 2024 and employment rose modestly. Selling prices rose at the steepest rate since May 2011.
What to do: Demand is strong and buyers will be comparing quotes. Give every quote a clear validity date, and make sure no enquiry waits overnight for a first reply.
Where Socianet fits
We sell a CRM, so here is our angle, kept apart from the news. Two of this week's stories are about AI agents doing sales work. Socianet has an AI agent that replies to leads, qualifies them and books calls, and it hands the conversation to a person when it should. You set what it covers, and every reply sits in one shared inbox with your WhatsApp, email, SMS and social messages, so a manager can see what was sent. Every plan includes unlimited users, so adding a rep does not add a seat fee.
Leads coming in faster than you can reply?
Send us the sheet you use now and we will show you the pipeline it becomes.
