Sales tech this week: UK firms hire, WhatsApp grows, Meet translates
Five stories from the week of 19 October 2026 for sales teams of 3 to 50. UK firms started adding staff again, WhatsApp paid messaging pushed up Meta's revenue, Google Meet now translates speech in 63 languages, Nigeria's telecoms regulator wants recycled phone numbers checked across more sectors, and HubSpot set a date to retire its case studies tool.
In this story
1. UK firms add staff again, but the official count lags
S&P Global's flash UK PMI, published on 23 October 2026, put the composite output index at 53.1 in October, up from 52.0 in September and an eight-month high. Staffing rose marginally for the first time since September 2024, with the gain coming from service firms, while manufacturers trimmed jobs slightly. New work grew at its fastest pace in 25 months, at home and in export markets. Input cost inflation was the strongest since June. These are early (flash) figures. The official data published on 20 October is more cautious: unemployment was 4.7% for June to August 2026, and the early estimate of payrolled employees was down 0.2% on a year earlier in September.
| Measure | Latest | Period |
|---|---|---|
| UK composite PMI (flash) | 53.1 (September 52.0) | October 2026 |
| UK services PMI (flash) | 53.1 (September 52.1) | October 2026 |
| Unemployment rate (16+) | 4.7% | June to August 2026 |
| Payrolled employees, year on year | Down 0.2% (early estimate) | September 2026 |
| Median monthly pay, year on year | Up 4.4% (early estimate) | September 2026 |
What to do: More new orders usually means more enquiries. If your team is about to add a rep, write down who owns each lead and how fast it gets a reply before they start, so a busier quarter does not mean slower replies.
2. WhatsApp paid messaging lifts Meta's revenue
On Meta's third quarter results call on 21 October 2026, chief financial officer Susan Li said "other revenue" in its apps reached $1.1 billion, up 59%, driven mainly by WhatsApp paid messaging and subscriptions. Meta's total revenue for the quarter was $64.60 billion. Mark Zuckerberg called WhatsApp "an increasingly important platform for agents" and said Meta has business agents that help businesses with sales and customer support. Li said Muse for Small Business launched in late September as skills inside the Muse app, connecting to a business's Instagram account, Facebook Pages and ad accounts, and that Meta's new AI businesses can begin adding revenue in 2027. Meta also said at least 500 million self-identified small businesses use its apps.
What to do: Meta is investing in business messaging and charging for it. Since 1 October replies inside the 24-hour window are charged above a free monthly allowance (our story on that change). Check last month's WhatsApp bill against the number of conversations that became deals.
3. Google Meet translates speech in 63 languages
Google said on 22 October 2026 that real-time speech translation in Google Meet now covers 63 languages and detects the spoken language automatically, so each listener can hear the call in their own language. It is included in Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus and several AI plans. Base plans get up to 90 minutes of translation per meeting. Rapid Release domains got it from 22 October; Scheduled Release domains get it gradually from 2 November, over up to 15 days. It does not work on dial-in calls, recordings or live streams. Guests from other companies can use it when the organiser has an eligible plan. Google did not list the 63 languages, so we could not confirm whether Swahili, Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo or Arabic are included. Separately, Meet now posts a recap card with decisions and action items into the meeting's Google Chat space when "Take notes for me" is on; Scheduled Release domains get it from 27 October.
What to do: If you sell across the UK, Nigeria, Kenya and the UAE, test translation on an internal call first, then try it with a friendly customer. Do not rely on it for prices, terms or anything you would put in a contract: confirm those in writing.
4. Nigeria: recycled phone number checks to widen
At the Nigerian Communications Commission's 95th Telecom Consumer Parliament in Lagos on 20 October 2026, its Executive Vice Chairman, Dr Aminu Maida, said the commission plans to extend its Telecommunications Identity Risk Management System (TIRMS) to more sectors. The system helps organisations spot phone numbers that have been recycled to a new subscriber or flagged for fraud. Banks already get access under a memorandum the NCC signed with the Central Bank of Nigeria in April 2026. Maida called a phone number "part of our digital identity". No start date or list of sectors was given.
What to do: If your customer records rest on a phone number alone, add a second contact detail, such as an email address, and note when each number was last confirmed. A number that has not answered for months may now belong to someone else.
5. HubSpot retires its case studies tool on 12 December
HubSpot's help pages say its case studies tool will be sunset on 12 December 2026. Published case studies will be copied into blog posts at their original web addresses, drafts become draft blog posts, listing pages become blog listing pages and industries become blog tags. A HubSpot partner's weekly round-up of 19 October flagged the change and said no action is needed for published case studies.
What to do: If you use the tool, check after the move that your case study links, forms and buttons still work, because those pages are often the ones sales reps send to prospects.
Where Socianet fits
We sell a CRM, so here is our angle, kept apart from the news. If you are hiring, Socianet gives every new rep the same pipeline from day one, with unlimited users on every plan, so a new starter does not need their own spreadsheet. WhatsApp, email, SMS and social messages land in one shared inbox, with follow-up timetables and tasks so a lead does not wait while the team grows. Our WhatsApp runs through Meta's official Business Platform, so Meta's message charges apply to Socianet customers too. If you are moving off a spreadsheet, our guide to importing contacts from Excel without the mess covers fixing phone numbers and duplicates first.
Busier quarter ahead?
Send us your lead sheet and we will show you it as a live pipeline your whole team can work from.
